Every Child Needs a Teacher is a campaign led by the Global Campaign for Education to demand that states act now to ensure every child has well-trained and well-supported teacher. The first years of Modern Foreign Language participated in the Global Action Week this year.

We had a discussion with Janet Thomas, Londrina’s Secretary of Education and also Jozélia Tanaca, coordinator of Londrina Global Project.

To get to know more about the Campaign, visit the website.

1st day summary:

As a contribution of our city to the Global Campaign for Education, the State University of Londrina, located in the north of Paraná, in Brazil, held a meeting among Janet Thomas, Londrina’s Secretary of Education, one member of her staff, University professors of the English language course and teachers to be from the same University. The meeting took place on April 23rd and the theme of the discussion was the current frame of English teaching in our city. Some second year students presented the main topics of the Global Campaign for Education and, after the Secretary’s speech, all the presents were able to relate those topics with our reality.

According to Ms. Thomas, there are some laws on the way to be approved in Brazil that aim to guarantee that in four years time, every child will be sent to school when they are four years old. Nowadays it happens when they are six. In our city, it implies that at least eleven new schools would have to be built a year so for the next four years so that these kids will have a school to go to. The biggest problem concerning this fact is that the Federal Government of our country finances the building of the schools but not the maintenance, and the city’s government does not have enough money to do so.

Another aspect is about the teachers. Considering all the social factors we face in Brazil, the number of teachers who want to occupy a place in these new schools and face the work is becoming reduced. There are many situations of sick teachers who are then placed at different posts rather than teaching. In the case of the Program called Global Londrina, the teachers who had taken an undergraduate English Teacher Education course were invited to take part in the Project and be in charge of the English classes for the early years of primary schools.

The government presents some projects focused on better work conditions and also on improving teachers´qualifications, but it is still a problem. Furthermore, the curriculum of some universities does not include the necessary qualification for teachers to teach children, what makes it difficult for the commitment with good quality Education. Regarding this aspect, one of our professors informed that besides having one optional subject on Teaching English to children, our university will offer a specialization course in this area.

The questions addressed to the secretary of Education covered issues such as working conditions, funding for Education, teachers´ health problems and the kind of support offered by the government and teachers´qualification to teach English to children. Overall , it was a relevant discussion and a great opportunity to act for our Campaign.

 2nd Day Summary:

The Global Action Week at the department of Modern Foreign Languages at the State University of Londrina was carried out with a discussion between our English Teacher Education undergraduate students and Jozélia Tanaca, coordinator of Londrina Global Project which aims at the implementation of teaching English in elementary public schools. One of the challenges faced by the project is the high demand for skilled professionals, given that they necessarily need to have a degree in Pedagogy or Teacher Education and also a degree in Modern Foreign Languages – English to be well qualified to teach these children. Despite the growing number of courses in level of expertise in this area, there is still a large gap to be filled. Of the 37,000 students in elementary school, only 10,000 are assisted by the project. The teachers promote meetings and discussions for the development of appropriate and contextualized learning materials, methods and curriculum. The project objective is to increase social and educational opportunities for students, develop knowledge and skills that facilitate the continuous learning of English, and the ability to use the language. Since the pilot project in 2008, the observed results have been positive.

  1. Firstly, I would like to thank all the participants and our guest speakers for our Global Action Week at UEL. Secondly, I would like to invite all readers and followers of our blog to make a comment on our participation in the campaign. Finally, I want to announce that some opinion articles produced as part of the campaign will be posted shortly for your appreciation as well. Tks.

    • Dear teacher Vera,
Your engagement on educational cause is an example for us ! you give voice to a lot of people, no matter where you are and make possible important discussions . I’m prouf of being part of your group, Thanks for the opportunity. I’m learning a lot!

  2. Hello, teacher!
I would like comentary: don’t have structure in our município, but the nucleus, in the personal miss Josélia and her staff voluntary teachers has activy solidary mutual and sympathicc with this very important cause. That is a education child elementary. Interest, pawn there is no duvide. Congratulation English’teachers by Londrina and region !

  3. The company is great, I found a great implementation this idea that children have acess to english. What I found most interesting was the teachers interest in participating in this project, especially wih regard to do english teachers for better preparation in the classroom.

  4. I really do think this Londrina Global project is a good initiative, especially nowadays when English Language Teaching is considered by some people ineffective and unnecessary in public schools. Moreover, promote discussions for the development of appropriate materials, methods and curriculum with the teachers instead of just impose them without asking for teachers’ opinions can work much better. But, if the final objective of the project is just to promote future qualified workers for local industries, considering students “products to be improved” and without focusing on personal development, then it is disappointing and I think this project is right for the wrong reasons.

  5. I liked the way that she explained about the lack os professionals to teach english to kids. In my poor conception, I thought that it was easy to find teachers, but for kids it’s hard and a long work. It was an great explanation about this great project.

  6. I agree with Felipe’s idea, that the project is indeed a great thing, But also, the main goal (that would be CHEAP qualified professionals) is not that good. If the companies who are interested in getting qualified professionals at least invested more, maybe giving infrastrcture and proper teacher training, it would be two birds with one rock.

  7. Even I thinking that my participation for the campaign is not able to change all the education in the world I think that my participation was very important, because my participation in the Global Week can be the first step. Because if EVERYBODY in each country, state, city or school participate in the campaign we can JOIN the forces and then be able to change, to make better the education in all over the world.
I really enjoyed to participate because I was able to know better how is the real situation of education in my city and some explanation of the problems, and what could I do as a future teacher to change it.

  8. Participation in the Global Campaing for Education is an opportunity to reflect the way Education is offered all over the world and specially in our city. Many things must be done to improve and make better the way English is been taught in elementary schools. We have insufficient English teachers in the classrooms as well as insufficient schools for every child nowadays. Local educational authorities have to face and cope with these challenges. We implement english teaching in the early ages, and I consider this as an audacious attitude. Now we have to universalize English teaching for children and make this classes accessible in every school. I’m coping and facing a lot of uncertanties in order to go ahead with this Idea. I’m not alone and that is what makes me to continue to strive towards this Idea. Society’s consciousness and voice, about this work is very important. So, participate, your opinion represents action for a better education and better quality for english teaching for children from our public schools. Think globally and act locally, that’s the best and easier way to engage in this very important educational cause.

  9. I think this campaign was a good step to start with answer and solutions to a lot of issues in education, one of them, the lack of teachers in the world. It was awesome the participation and all the people involved, I really liked to be part of it, and join this campaing, it make me see the reality of education in different ways and places.

  10. Hi, I have some complaints and critics but I’m wondering and thinking how I’ll write it so it doesn’t look disrespectful… I really like a direct approach but usually it is read as a disrespectful thing… also, people tends to understand what I say as a generalization or a extreme point of view. Well, I’ll decide it and post here later!
    😀

  11. Hello everyone! after the meeting with the city´s education secretary i was thinking how difficulty it is to make changes in order to improve our region schools .( sometimes simple things) that will take time to accomplish because all the paperwork and lack of funds that it is needed .Other point that got me really surprised was the problems the public teachers are facing in the classroom wich cause o lot of them to go on medical license . while we need more teachers , few are unable to work…

  12. I think a great project and a great initiative, seeking to improve the teaching material, teaching method and condition of the educator. Had no knowledge of how complicated teaching for children and the need for a professional really trained for this task.

  13. The project is a good idea, she explained very well, but I thought that, as she is the coordinator of the project, she wasn’t prepared to explain it in english. But even so, the main idea of the project is wonderful, teaching children on the early years of school can be very helpful. But still there is much to be faced, only a few schools are included on the project, and the lack of teachers is a serious problem that has to be fixed.

  14. As for the talk about teachers and teaching English in series of initial studies. It is an extremely complex problem, if there is anything praiseworthy, is the commitment of certain people, but there are still many issues to be addressed and improved.

The issue of education can not be seen only by the teaching of a particular subject. All courses and their workloads should be evaluated. There are many disciplines, which causes small load to pass the contents of a didactic and pedagogic correct in trying to pass various content, overload the student and also the teacher.

Education in our country is still renegade secondary plans, marketing reflects nothing done with the various realities in school environments, greatly in the classroom.

Actually greater interaction in higher education and activities in schools, can cause sensitive improvements, especially in spite of all the difficulties, in percentage terms the English project, could meet a large number of students.

  15. This Project is very good to children develop their english skills in an early age. It is very sad that not many schools can be included in this projetc, and the current lack of teachers to be a part of it. Hopefuly in time this will change.
