Ineffective education. Is it the students’ fault?

It is a common problem to hear teachers complaining about their salary. Most of them rant about how badly they get paid to have to teach and educate the society of a new generation. They also speak proudly about their function in society and how progress depends on good teachers. However, in all that enthusiastic speech for the improvement of society and better wages, teachers’ education is put aside.

Specifically in public schools, teachers complain about the students’ behaviour and the complete lack of interest in the subject.These elements are pointed out as being the cause for ineffective learning by the students.

Nevertheless, once again, when having a speech like that it is implied that the problem is with the students and no problems are identified as coming from the teachers.

In my personal experience, even before concluding an undergraduatedegree, the majority of the future teachers already take for granted that their students in public schools are not interested in the subject and, it does not matter what they do, students will be rebels and will not learn anyway.

Well, it is certain that students are not easy to deal with, but neither are people. Each person has different needs. Each person has a different culture,different habits, anddifferent personalities. Therefore, each student has a different reality that makes them unique, makes them behave differently, and that is what teachers need to be aware of and also learn how to deal with.

Concluding anundergraduatedegree is not what makes teachers ready to teach. This is very important, but this is not what will keep students interested and, more important, this does not guarantee that teachers will develop a good teaching ability.

When graduating, most of the teachers turn out to be professionals in public schools teaching in high school and basic/elementary school.

A problem with this is that first they are not really ready to interact with students.Students from basic education and high school need special attention that also involves a bit of psychology; a good method on how to deal and interact with students must be part of the teachers’ education. Knowing how to develop a relationship with students is essential for maintaining a healthy classroom and avoids complaints about how lazy and uninterested they are.

And yes, teachers need to have a great formation and know all about what they are teaching but this will not be enough when teachers do not know how to deal with people and how to expose their knowledge to the students.

Concluding anundergraduatedegree is good, engaging in a post-graduate one is even better, but it is essential to have teachers in courses or communities that help them to solve their daily problems, as how to deal with a loud student, or how to hold students’ attention. It is not just a matter of knowing the subject, it is dealing with people.

After learning how to have a good relationship with students there is the necessity of having a specialized teacher. Investments in teachers’ education must be done to improve their own education. Post-graduate courses, for example, are a great way to keep in touch with the formal aspect of education and amplifying their range of knowledge. A specialization course, like a master’s degree, is also of a great importance to keep a good level of education in a teachers’ career. All that together will bring credibility to the education system, and as happens with any professionalsector, when having a better qualification and good and effective results, the recognition will come with extra zeros on the final payroll.
